Embroidery Thread Colour Matcher: Match Thread Colours from Photos
Find the perfect thread for any colour. Have a favourite photo or image you have always wanted to turn into an embroidered piece? Our tool allows you to instantly find the closest matching embroidery thread colours. For peace of mind, we don’t upload your images to a server or save them anywhere, so you can be safe knowing your photos stay private.
1 Upload a Photo
For best results, use a clear photo with good lighting. The tool identifies dominant colours and matches them to the nearest DMC and Anchor embroidery threads. DMC and Anchor stranded cotton is sold as 6-strand floss. Most embroidery uses 2-3 strands at a time. Your image is never uploaded or stored on any server — all processing happens entirely in your browser, on your device.

Our Embroidery Thread Colour Matcher is designed to help you build cohesive palettes and generate printable thread lists for embroidery, cross-stitch, and thread painting projects. Simply upload your image, and our algorithm will help to identify the closest matching threads and hues to bring your vision to life.
How It Works
Using the Stitchers Suite Colour Matcher is a straightforward process designed as a starting point for your embroidery, cross-stitch or thread painting projects.
- Upload a photo, fabric sample, or digital artwork directly to the interface.
- Our tool attempts to extract the colour, scanning the image to identify the most prominent and necessary shades.
- Refine your project. Choose how many thread suggestions you would like, which brand of embroidery thread you would like (you can have both!) and more. All come with previews of what your finished project could look like.
- Explore your Thread List. The matching logic will take the shades and give you a list of suggested DMC and Anchor threads based on the image that has been uploaded, as well as roughly how much of the image that thread covers.
- Save your thread list or print it out. When you’re at the shop, you’ll know exactly what to buy!
Always double check the DMC and Anchor threads suggested against your shade cards as colours on your screen will differ.
How Can I Use the Embroidery Thread Colour Matching Tool?
Our Colour Matcher tool is versatile enough for various needlework needs:
- Matching thread colours from photos: Turn a landscape or portrait photo into a workable embroidery pattern.
- Creating palettes from artwork: Extract professional colour schemes from your favourite digital or traditional art and get the nearest DMC or Anchor thread shade.
- Planning embroidery projects: Determine exactly which threads you need to buy before you start stitching.
- Finding alternatives between brands: Easily see which Anchor thread corresponds to a DMC shade from right within the tool.
Example Colour Matches
To see the tool in action, consider a photo of a sunset. The tool might extract a vibrant coral, matching it to DMC 351 (Coral) or its closest equivalent, Anchor 10. For a deep sky blue, it may suggest DMC 797 (Royal Blue) or Anchor 133. These conversions provide a reliable starting point for choosing your materials, ensuring your finished piece captures the essence of the original image. Best Practices & Tips
For the most accurate thread matches, follow these tips when uploading your photo:
- Lighting: Ensure your reference photos are taken in bright, natural light to avoid artificial yellow or blue tints.
- Image Quality: Use higher-resolution images so the colour picker can distinguish between subtle shade variations.
- Cropping: Crop your image to focus only on the area you intend to stitch to prevent background colours from skewing your palette.
- Adjusting Thread Colour Counts: Be realistic about the size of your project; more colours leads to more detail but requires more frequent thread changes, and of course, more threads to buy!
- Use the Group by Shade option for larger projects: In some cases you can reduce the number of individual skeins to buy by grouping similar shades whilst still getting a close match to the image you are using.
How Many Threads Should I Use in my Project?
Choosing the right number of colours is vital for the success of your project — use these as a rough guideline:
- Simple Projects (5–10 colours): Best for minimalist designs, text, or basic geometric shapes.
- Floral & Illustrative (10–25 colours): Ideal for standard embroidery designs that require some shading and depth.
- Detailed & Realistic (25+ colours): Necessary for thread painting or photorealistic cross-stitch where smooth gradients are essential.
DMC vs. Anchor: Understanding the Matches
While we provide matches for both DMC and Anchor, please note that these matches are often approximate. Each brand uses unique dyeing processes and chemical compositions, meaning a “perfect” 1:1 match does not always exist. We attempt to calculate the nearest mathematical equivalent, but we recommend viewing the threads in person whenever possible to ensure the final palette meets your artistic expectations, or referring to your DMC or Anchor Shade Card.
